Extend the Life of Your Computer
In some respects, computers are like cars.
Just as conscientious car owners extend the life of their vehicles by regularly changing the oil, performing engine tune-ups and replacing tires, computer owners can get the most out of their systems with regular maintenance and attention.
At TRTS, we recognize that your computer is an important investment. To get the most out of that investment, we recommend you consider the following:
- Determine what you want to use your computer for. With the right care, older machines can usually perform basic Internet, word processing and spreadsheet activities for extended periods. Does your current computer need more advanced support for the latest gaming, photography or streaming video requirements? If that’s the case, investing your maintenance/upgrade dollars in a new machine might make the most sense for the long run.
- Create and follow a maintenance plan for your new or existing computer. Just as it’s recommended that you get a physical before starting an exercise program, get a computer check-up on your existing computer so that you know where you stand.
Whether it’s a new or existing computer, TRTS recommends you perform the following regular maintenance activities to keep your system running at an optimum level:
- Weekly
- Confirm your anti-virus software is up-to-date (and make sure you know when it's time to be renewed).
- Monthly
- Do you back-up your computer data with an online service? If so, confirm that it’s working. Backing up your data is important – look for this topic in an upcoming “I Wish Someone Told Me...”
- Do you have automatic software updates? If so, check to see if you are current.
- Quarterly
- Delete documents, spreadsheets, music and photos you no longer want.
- Archive important data to a CD, DVD or flash drive.
- Run the Defrag function on your computer (another upcoming “I Wish Someone Told Me...” topic).
- Annually
- Have your computer evaluated and serviced by a professional.
At TRTS, we offer customers a Ten Point Computer Check-Up Service that focuses on assessment, cleaning and servicing to optimize your computer’s performance.
